What is a retirement village?

A retirement village is a residential complex designed specifically for retirees to live in. They are typically occupied by people aged 55 years and over. Retirement villages come in many forms, ranging from self-contained units or houses where retirees live independently, to serviced premises or an assisted living facility where meals, cleaning and other services can be provided.

How is a retirement village different to a nursing home?

It can be easy to confuse retirement villages with nursing homes, but there are some important differences. Generally speaking, nursing homes are only occupied by residents who can no longer look after themselves, whereas retirement village residents live independently and choose to live in the retirement village for the community and lifestyle. The style of accommodation also differs, with nursing home residents typically living in a furnished room, and retirement villages offering private standalone units or apartments.

For more information on nursing homes, see our handy guide on moving into a nursing home.

How much does senior living cost?

In addition to the cost of purchasing a unit or villa, you’ll generally have to pay monthly service fees that contribute to the day-to-day running of the village. You might also need to contribute to some of your own care costs.

For each of the villages featured here, we have included some property prices as a guide, where available, but you will need to reach out to the villages directly to find out more about their specific service, management, and exit fees.

In Western Australia, retirement villages must comply with the Retirement Villages Act 1992, which sets out the rights and obligations of both residents and retirement villages. It’s a good place to start to know what information retirement villages should provide you when it comes to costs.
